Break Away Youth Group
Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We are Gospel-centered ministry for students in 6th-12th grades that meets regularly 2 times a week. Our focus with the students is to help equip them to know how to study the Bible, what the Biblical definition of loving God and others is and how to apply it practically, and that their ministry doesn't start once they become adults but has already begun!
- Students 6th grade and up meet for in depth and interactive Bible study in room 119a.
- Many of our students serve on rotations in our nurseries and childrens church program. When not serving in our childrens ministry program, we encourage our junior and senior high students to participate in worship and Bible study in the sanctuary.
- At various time during the school year, our high school girls and boys meet in seperate groups for a more focused time of Bible study at the Simons house.
- Starting promptly at 7, students join with the men's and women's Bible study for a short time of praise music with our worship team.
- Students then transition to room 119a to meet for games, food, Bible study and fellowship.
- Late Afternoon/Evenings
- On the Last Friday of the Month, our youth group meets for a low-cost time of fun and fellowship. Last Fridays are a great time for our students to invite their friends and make memories with each other.
- Throughout the year, we hold a variety of youth service projects, holiday parties, camping/over night trips, and more!
If you have any questions about getting plugged into or serving in our youth group, please contact Pastor Stephen Simons (email@example.com).
Sundays 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Available for 3-Year-Olds - 6th Grade AWANA clubs focus on Bible memorization, Christian service, Bible study and application, game time, and fellowship. Our club members have the option to meet weekly on either Sunday or Monday nights. In addition to our weekly meetings, we hold an annual Grand Prix (pine car derby), usually in the spring. Each quarter we hold a theme night (like crazy hair night, or backwards/inside-out night). Additionally, club members have the opportunity to earn stamps each week and for special events. Clubbers can redeem their stamps for items (e.g., pencils, small toys, books) at the AWANA store! To learn more about the overall national program, please visit the official AWANA site.
Ages 3-5 This is such a precious developmental stage where young children can begin to form good Bible memorization habits. Cubbie Bear, Luv E Lamb, and Katie Collie help our little Cubbies learn God's truth in a way that is friendly to these young learners!
Kindergarten-2nd Grade At the Sparks level, in addition to Bible verse memorization, the children begin to learn the basic structure of the Bible (i.e. how many books are in each testament, the order of the books, etc). They also begin to learn what it means to share their faith and are encouraged to invite friends to club nights.
Truth & Training (T&T):
3rd-6th Grade Like Cubbies and Sparks, T&T students participate in a combined game time; however, they separate into girls-only and boys-only groups for Bible-memorization and for more in-depth Bible lessons each week with a particular emphasis on practical application. Additionally, when possible, the girls T&T and, separately, the boys T&T groups have a camp out or sleep over at the end of each school year as a final celebration.
To participate in any children's ministry event or class, each child must be registered in order to ensure your child and our staff's safety. Registration for AWANA is closed for the current session.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email the AWANA Commander or call us at (703) 425 - 3800.
Small Groups and Classes
Equip AND Engage
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer. Acts 2:42
At The City Gates Church, we strive to encourage active spiritual growth and a strong sense of community. But sometimes the culture and pressure of the DC area can make these simple goals hard to achieve. That’s one reason we offer home groups and classes throughout the area and throughout the week –they’re a place to connect with each other for encouragement, prayer, worship, teaching, and a reminder that we’re not in this alone. Home groups and classes are a great way to get connected, and new people show up all the time. If you are interested in joining a group, but none of these fit your schedule, check out our Women’s Ministry and Men’s Ministry pages!
Sunday Mornings at The City Gates Church

The Women’s Ministry of The City Gates Church is centered on pursuing the Lord, as Hosea 6:3 so beautifully communicates. He is our ultimate goal. Our desire is to strengthen ladies in their passion for the Word of God. Bible studies are the central focus of this ministry as well as prayer and encouraging one another. We desire to be a safe place to come, rest and enjoy deep fellowship as we walk alongside each other. We are all working out our own salvation with fear and trembling and having a sister to lean on is important! Please come and get to know us.
Please know that we are here and available! Even if you don’t take part in a Bible study with us, we still love you. Hopefully you’re able to connect with us at monthly breakfasts that run during the school year, or at other functions that spring up. We understand that some of you are called to pursue the Lord in a home group setting along with your family, and some of you work schedules that don’t allow you to make some events. For others, however, being in a Bible study with other women is the main place you look to plug in. We want you to know that we are available to you and pray for you and love you even if we don’t have the privilege of spending time with you on a weekly basis.
Here is a list of current Bible studies.
Alternate Wednesdays 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Ladies Inductive bi-Monthly Bible Study on Leviticus every other Wednesday in Annandale. Contact Melani at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
Wednesday night and Thursday morning Bible study meet at TCGC. Childcare offered at the Thursday morning study. Please email email@example.com for more information.
For anyone who has been the recipient of a meal when you were ill or after having a baby you know what a blessing this ministry is. If you would like to bless another family in this tangible way please let us know!
For address or questions, please contact Women @ TheCityGatesChurch.org.
Men are essential in the Kingdom of God. He has high standards for them in the home, the church, and the community where He wants them to lead and love in His name. How do we meet those standards? Through the empowering of the Holy Spirit and with the wisdom, counsel, and encouragement of other men. At The City Gates Church men meet regularly to sharpen one another “as iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17), so come join us. There are times you’ll be able to give and times you’ll be able to receive as we help each other grow into better reflections of our Lord.
Opportunities for fellowship:
Men come together for a time of prayer, praise, study, and fellowship. For location and further information please contact Jesse Wallace at firstname.lastname@example.org.

We have the joy and responsibility of reaching others with the gospel and disciplining them as they grow. It's a responsibility that we bear personally, and corporately.
So, the first step in our missionary endeavors is always personal - to reach out to those around us - even our children and our friends can be considered a mission field and/or in need of discipleship. In everything that we do, and everywhere we go, we try to be salt and light impacting the lives of people around us for the gospel - we don't 'send' missionaries , we 'are' missionaries.
As a church body, we reach out corporately: locally and internationally.
LOCAL MISSIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS:
Locally in the greater Washington DC Area we support homeless outreaches, provide support to people in need, and assist in the domestic offices of international ministries. Below is a list of opportunities and ways to get involved around the area, and right here in our own church!
